Forage Winter Peas:
Winter Peas are often referred to as the ultimate cool season forage treat for deer. These forage peas grow rapidly and unlike many other cool season forages they are sweet as soon as they pop out of the ground. They rank at the top of the list for deer preference growing long succulent stems reaching 2 to 4 feet long. Winter Peas are very cold tolerant making them a perfect forage for Fall and Winter food plots. In moderate climates these peas will continue to grow through the Winter and into the late Spring producing tons of food for your herd when forage is hardest to find.
Forage Oats:
Sweeter and more tender than plain oats, Forage Oats produces forage that deer love the whole season. These highly palatable forage oats are higher in protein, and more digestible than other forage grains. Forage Oats are more cold and drought resistant so the forage is available during normal stress periods for wildlife. These oats are easy to establish and deer begin eating them just days after planting, throughout the fall/winter season and will provide additional forage in the spring in northern climates.
BONUS MIX - Triticale and Clover
WinterPz has the bonus of both Triticale and Clover added to the mixture. Triticale helps extend the life of the plot and Forage Clover ensures that your herd has a valuable food source into the next year. |

Moisture, Soil Preparation & Planting Depth are crucial to the success of your food plot
1. Cultivate plot 4-6 inches deep. 2. Add 75 lbs 13-13-13 fertilizer per 1/4 acre and add lime as needed. 3. Broadcast and cover seed with up to 1/4 inch of soil.
|
 |
Soil Preparation:
We recommend breaking the ground and cultivating the soil 4”- 6” deep. Remove all competing weeds and then add fertilizer and lime as recommended. It is important to level and lightly pack the soil before seeding your plot. You can lightly pack the soil by running over your food plot with an ATV or a roller.
a. Fertilizer Requirements - A soil test should be performed prior to planting to determine your plots need for fertilizer & lime. If a soil test cannot be done, we recommend preparing the seed bed by applying up to 75 lbs of 13-13-13 fertilizer or equivalent per 1/4 acre. We also recommend fertilizing when the plants are 6” tall with 10 lbs of Ammonium Nitrate or equivalent per 1/4 acre to increase the protein & forage available as WinterPz Bonus Mix begins to be heavily grazed by your deer herd. Do not fertilize during a drought.
b. pH of Soil & Liming - The recommended soil pH is 6.0 -7.5. A soil test should be performed prior to planting to determine your soil pH and the need for lime & fertilizer. If a soil test cannot be done, we recommend preparing the seed bed by applying up to 500 lbs of lime per 1/4 acre. Soil pH is extremely important since the pH of the soil helps determine if the plants can metabolize the fertilizer in the soil.
Planting Depth:
Plant 1/4” deep by mechanical drill or by broadcasting the seed evenly over the seed bed, dragging the plot to cover the seed.
Moisture:
Soil moisture is vital. The soil should be moist when planting, with a reasonable expectation of future rainfall. If adequate moisture is not available for an extended period, the plot may become stunted or fail to establish. |
